On August 8th My little man turned 3 and he asked for cake, 2 presents and spaghetti.
Allis Chalmer tractors are known for their orange color and my son being an orange loving engine revving boy he is he picked the tractor pan out at the pan rental store and then after coming home he did not choose the green, blue or yellow tractors pictured on the pan, no. His Tractor had to be ORANGE.

I did use a box cake for the tractor because the shape comes out better with box cakes for some reason...German Chocolate.
And for My big boys play group Birthday party I made these cherry jam filled cup cakes. I thought they were so good.
I got the recipe from my 2004 Better homes and Gardens cookbook and I used my homemade sour cherry jam that I made earlier this summer (see I have been cooking even if I have not been blogging) .
Cherry Filled Cup Cakes
1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup Cherry preserves
powdered sugar icing
cherries for decoration
1) preheat the oven to 350F. Line muffin cups with paper baking cups and set aside.
2) In a large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add milk, butter, egg, and vanilla. Beat on low speed until combined. Beat on medium speed for 1 minute. Spoon 1 scant tablespoon of batter into each muffin cup. Add 1 teaspoon of cherry preserves (I added a little more) and top with 1 tablespoon of cake batter.
3) bake cupcakes for about 15 minutes or until toothpick comes out center of cupcake clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely.
4) Drizzle each with powdered sugar icing and top with a preserved cherry.
Powdered Sugar Icing
Combine 21/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 2 tablespoons milk. Stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until icing reaches drizzling consistency.

What a beautiful cake he had. A huge hug to my adorable L. And a big hug to the talented mommy.
Don't ask me to show you the bear decorated cake I made for my daughter. All I can tell you is that she couldn't figure out what animal it was. That's how bad it was ;) But I am not good with cakes, and I am learning to face it.
I'm with Warda--I can't decorate (or make frosting) at all.

Both the cake and cupcakes look great! Happy birthday to your little guy. I miss the heavy machinery phase. I need to have another one. Alex really loved excavators.

It sounds like a lovely b'day was had!
with the right tips and bags it is not that hard but it is messy and by the time your done it feels like your hand is going to fall off. I have done pooh bear, cinderella, a car and now a tractor.
I should post the frosting recipe that we dubbed "good frosting" when we were kids.
yes heavey machinery has been big this year with our road being replaced he got a show every day.
